Response to growing demand from NHS and health organisations puts Isansys Lifecare in leading position
While many businesses have struggled to survive the economic doldrums of recent years, Isansys Lifecare Ltd is bucking the trend and continuing to flourish as it prepares its new generation wireless patient monitoring devices and vital sign data platform for at-scale deployments at home and abroad.
Isansys, the provider of complete real-time physiological patient data services and systems, is rapidly expanding and this growth is being driven by a burgeoning demand by healthcare providers for innovative, market-ready solutions that can enable improved patient monitoring and alerting both in hospitals and at home and reduce costs for the NHS.
Since April, the company has secured two SBRI NHS healthcare contracts, won OBN’s Best New Medtech Development Programme award, and is currently deploying a range of products and systems within hospitals in the UK, and in India.
Keith Errey, CEO of Isansys, says: “There is a growing awareness of the potential of digital technology within the healthcare community. We have simply responded to the increasing demand from clinicians and the NHS for improved medical services that can take advantage of the extraordinary functionality and economies of scale of the latest mobile and communication technologies. We utilise innovative methods to re-purpose these technologies and innovative business models to deliver solutions to meet these needs.
“For the last two years, we have been working with a number of hospitals and healthcare service providers to deliver patient monitoring services and patient status solutions based on the first generation of our Lifetouch system and Patient Status Engine (PSE) platform. The clinicians, nurses and patients using the PSE have provided valuable feedback and insights that have enabled us to develop second-generation devices and systems in line with the next wave of market demand. These are about to be put into service in several locations and I look forward to updating you with news of these deployments shortly.”
Keith also attributes the growth of Isansys to the support provided by the NHS England and the AHSN (Academic Health Science Networks) led Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) for Healthcare.
The SBRI works with clinicians, and other key players, to identify priority areas where technology can make a clear difference, then harnesses the ingenuity of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to develop effective solutions. It focuses on clearly identified NHS needs, brings clinicians and business together at an early stage and fully funds viable projects through three stages, from proof of concept to delivery in the marketplace.
Isansys was awarded two SBRI healthcare contracts earlier this year to improve patient safety and reduce risks for cancer patients. Isansys’ successful proposals were inspired by requests from UK clinicians and nurses who identified opportunities to extend the applications of Isansys’ CE marked end-to-end wireless patient surveillance system, the Patient Status Engine™ (PSE) to realise new methods to care for their patients.
The PSE system incorporates the Lifetouch cardiac monitor – a lightweight and unobtrusive smart patch that collects data directly from the patient and analyses every heartbeat to provide continuous heart rate, respiration rate and heart rate variability. It also includes a remotely triggerable ECG visualisation function for set-up and verification that may also be used as an event marker. With the Lifetemp continuous wireless clinical thermometer, a wireless pulse oximeter and blood pressure monitor, a patient’s physiology is automatically uploaded as a series of secure digital files to a patient record. The PSE kit also comes pre-bundled with several apps, such as patient charting, early warning scores and real-time HRV plots, useful for determination of autonomic function.
To reduce risk and provide a “cyber security blanket” for cancer patients who have been discharged from an outpatients’ clinic following chemotherapy, Isansys has developed new data analysis methods, reconfigured the PSE, and built the remote network to provide warning notifications of sepsis in patients at home within the 72-hour critical period. This will ensure sufficient time is available to allow community based interventions and avoid costly and traumatic hospital admission.
“Every patient monitored” is the ethos behind Isansys’ SBRI healthcare contract for improving patient safety. Combining a bedside display and data entry screen with the Lifetouch and other wireless wearable sensors the PSE reimagines the way patients are monitored in, and out, of hospital. Through the economies of scale and new consumer-driven technologies, the Isansys platform will enable all patients to be monitored where and whenever needed at a fraction of the cost of current patient monitoring equipment.
As a result of the continuing demand for the PSE and Lifetouch system, Isansys is expanding its teams in all areas including product development, manufacturing, marketing and sales, and regulatory. In just six months, it has nearly doubled its workforce from eight to 15.
Mathew Key, Isansys’ head of technology, said: “This is a very exciting time for Isansys. We’re working with a number of healthcare organisations and hospitals to provide a vital service which will not only save lives but will reduce overall costs for the NHS and other providers.
“It’s great to finally see our products in hospitals, being used on patients, and this is a great example of a collaboration between front-line clinicians, engineers and software designers to create a system which brings clear benefits to patients, nurses and clinical staff.”
